Waxing Crescent - The Moon appears to be partly but less than one-half illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is increasing.

I was born during the Moon's second phase, which is called Waxing Crescent, and on January 1, 1963 Pacific Time, the Moon appeared partly (thirty-one percent) illuminated by sunlight as shown.
