Cravings "R" Us?Learn the meaning of your comfort-food cravings! For many of us, the perfect Valentine gift is a big helping of our favorite food. Whether it's a piping-hot helping of mashed potatoes or a decadent ice cream sundae, we've all got a favorite comfort food. Now, research conducted by Professor Brian Wansink, director of the Food and Brand Laboratory at the University of Illinois, reveals that our comfort-food preference indicates hidden aspects of our personality "These favorites are usually holdovers from childhood, so they're tied to other deep-rooted parts of our psyche," he explains. Brownies - You're SensitiveIt's no surprise that ooey, gooey, chocolaty brownies scored high in Wansink's study. And even if they're not from Mom's oven, "they evoke nurturing feelings," says Wansink. And like those soft, rich brownies, your heart is tender and sweet. A caring listener, when friends have a problem, they come to you for advice. They know you'll be compassionate and slow to judge. Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes - You're a Straight Shooter"People who choose meat and potatoes believe in basics and are unpretentious," says Wansink. Super-reliable, you prefer not to draw attention to yourself - but that's not out of shyness. You have confidence in your abilities, but prefer to let them speak for themselves, Your hard work and clear thinking attract friendship and admiration. Macaroni and Cheese - You're Reflective"If macaroni and cheese gives you comfort, chances are you're nostalgic." It's not just the food, but the memories that bring you comfort - which means you seek out cozy nooks where you can cuddle up and take walks down memory lane. You're low-key, self-reliant and serene. Spaghetti and Meatballs - You're Sentimental"If you crave spaghetti and meatballs for comfort, you probably grew up in a close family where rituals were passed down for generations." Holiday celebrations are highlights in your family's lives. You shower your children with love, but make sure to keep a close rein and instill important values such as responsibility and respect. Apple Pie - You're an OriginalThough it's considered an American classic, apple pie wasn't an overwhelming favorite in Wansink's study. "It tends to be popular with a more unconventional crowd," he explains. You trust your inner voice - which leads you in unexpected directions. Whether it's delving into a new craft or getting creative in the kitchen, you go for it! Ice Cream Sundae - You're FlexibleAmerica's number-one choice for comfort food is ice cream. And with so many flavors, there's no shortage of choices. "People who choose it for comfort see life's 'big picture' and can go with the flow," says Wansink. So when a crisis arises, just like ice cream, you're able to stay cool. The Low-Carb Comfort Food Cookbook
